Fire near Red Shirt mostly knocked down

UPDATE (4:25 p.m.): Great Plains Fire Information has determined the size of the fire to be approximately 650 acres.


UPDATE (3:51 p.m.): Crews on scene are optimistic that the fire has been mostly knocked down in the Cheyenne River valley.



UPDATE (3:04 p.m.): The Battle Creek Fire Department is on scene, along with smaller brush trucks.

It is unclear if any more help besides the BIA will arrive on scene due to other hotspots popping up around the region.

The fire is crossing from Oglala Lakota County into Custer County.


RED SHIRT, S.D. — Crews are responding to a fire that has broken out east of Custer and Hermosa around Red Shirt, South Dakota.

Fairburn Fire Department is sending two fire trucks at the request of the Pine Ridge Bureau of Indian Affairs.

It is unclear at this time how big the fire is, how the fire started or how many resources are responding to the fire.
