Crews respond to late night structure fire on Harney Street in Custer

CUSTER, S.D. — The Custer Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday in the 400 block of Harney Street.

Crews arriving on scene found a free-burning fire, with moderate to heavy smoke in the interior of the two-story residential structure.

The fire was elevated to multiple alarms as it extended to the exterior and roof of the building, but crews were able to contain it to the original structure.

Crews responded from two states and multiple counties and faced freezing temperatures.

No injuries were reported.

The Black Hills Fire Chaplains Association and Red Cross serving Central and Western South Dakota are assisting the occupant.
