Crazy Horse and sculptor celebrated on important anniversary
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation celebrated the anniversary of two fundamental events Friday evening — the death of Crazy Horse in 1877 and the birth of the monument’s sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski in 1908.
Ziolkowski began carving the Crazy Horse Memorial in 1947 on what was then known as Storm Mountain. He continued to work on the monument until his death in 1982.
Following Ziolkowski’s death, his family continued to work on his vision. His daughter Jadwiga believes her father would be proud of the progress made with the monument and the museum.
“I think he would be so proud of what Monique and the crew have accomplished on the mountain. The new technology and everything that we’re able to use, the new way of measuring and just looking for the seam-lines and everything is absolutely incredible. I think he’d be very proud of their work. I think he’d be proud of all of Crazy Horse.”
Friday night’s celebration included fireworks and a night blast.
