Crash south of Worland leads to 63rd fatality on Wyoming’s roadways this year

WORLAND, Wyo — One person is dead and another injured after a fatal crash south of Worland, Wyoming. The accident marks the 63rd fatality on Wyoming’s roadways since the beginning of the year — as compared to 36 fatalities in 2018, 36 in 2017 and 19 in 2016 to date.

The accident happened on Monday morning when a 2005 Toyota Corolla traveling northbound on US 20 tried to pass another vehicle by moving into the southbound lane. The Toyota driver failed to see an oncoming southbound 1993 Chevrolet Caprice and both vehicles collided on the southbound shoulder of the roadway.

The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 39-year-old Annette R. Arey of Thermopolis, Wyoming. Arey succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet was 62-year-old Worland, Wyoming resident Henry J. Kumpe. Kumpe was transported to the Washakie Medical  Center for injuries he sustained in the accident.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Unsafe passing is being investigated as a contributing factor.
