Community Cleanup Week returns to Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The time for some spring cleaning in Rapid City has arrived with the 51st year of the Community Cleanup event taking place on Saturday.

After taking a pandemic year off in 2020, the cleanup event returned last year with over 1,500 volunteers.

This year will likely top that number as more than 2,000 volunteers have already signed up to help, with plenty of room for more. All this week through Friday, there will be free disposal at the city landfill.

Ria Harper with the Rapid City Solid Waste Division says she’s always amazed by how much gets collected on cleanup day.

“It’s kind of an eye opener to see how much can really be in the water, in the weeds and the ditches,” said Harper. “It makes you feel really good about yourself – knowing that you just got 12 bags of trash and picked it up from outside.”
