College Basketball: SD Mines upsets Augustana at East-West Challenge
Yellow Jackets fall to Northern State in overtime
SPEARFISH, S.D. – The South Dakota School of Mines men’s basketball team opened the East – West Challenge on Friday with a tough six-point loss against No. 15 Northern State.
But the Hardrockers bounced back in a big way on Saturday by upsetting Augustana University 76-71.
The score was tied nine times and there were 12 lead changes.
Allec Williams paced the Hardrockers with 21 points followed by Troy Brady with 17 points.
Saturday marked the first win over Augustana in the NCAA Div. II era and just the seventh time overall.
South Dakota Mines improves to 2-2 on the season, while Augustana falls to 3-1.
The Hardrockers hit the road on Friday, Nov. 22 for a game against the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Northern State 83, Black Hills State 81 OT
Meanwhile, the Black Hills State men’s basketball team lost to No. 15 Northern State on Saturday at the East-West Challenge, 83-81 in overtime.
Mason Stark hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining in overtime to secure the win for the Wolves.
The Yellow Jackets finished with four players in double figures.
Trey Whitley and Tyler Oliver each scored 19 points, followed by Joel Scott with 18 points and Stefan Desnica with 12 points.
Black Hills State is now 2-2 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets will host the South Dakota School of Mines on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
