Civic Center staff reveal further plans for expansion of Civic Center Arena

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Civic Center staff appeared at the Common Council meeting Monday night to give an update on the design and construction of the new arena.

The new, more modern arena will have more space on the concourse along with options for food trucks outside and vendors inside and will seat over 10,000 people, including options compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. In addition to retractable seats, the arena will have  “theater box” seating designs.

“People don’t want to sit in a room with their 12 best friends anymore. They want to be at a concert, get premium service, but they want to be part of the crowd and be in an open area.” says Craig Balzter, executive director of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The new arena will connect to the Barnett, making it easy for people to get around.

The city hopes to break ground on the new expansion in the fall.
