City hosting Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event
It is time to get rid of old paints, aerosols and chemicals around your house, yard and garage.
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The City’s Solid Waste Division is hosting the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event on Saturday, October 12 at the Central States Fairgrounds. The event, which encourages the public to bring many household hazardous waste materials for disposal, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The city last hosted the event in May 2017. This year’s event, which is supported by the Local Emergency Planning Committee, will also include a food drive. The public is encouraged to bring nonperishable food items as admission to the event with the food benefitting Feeding South Dakota.
“The hazardous household waste disposal event is very popular and we try to host it every couple years,” said Torie Fields of the City’s Solid Waste Division. “It’s an opportunity to get rid of materials and chemicals that have been sitting around the house, yard and garage. And the food drive is an added bonus for everyone participating in the event this year.”
The event is for household items and business or commercial items will not be accepted. Acceptable items include aerosols, spot removers, pool chemicals, antifreeze, pest control chemicals, oven cleaners/degreasers, oil based paints/stains, lawn and garden chemicals, household solvents, gasoline/kerosene and disinfectants.
Items not accepted include latex paint, agricultural chemicals, commercial waste and chemicals, industrial waste, radioactive waste and ammunition/explosives.
Items such as asbestos, E-waste, latex paint, lead acid batteries, medical waste, tires and clean used oil won’t be accepted at this event but can be accepted at various locations in Rapid City.
