Christmas Car Giveaway: Rapid City and Sioux Falls-based charity needs your help picking recipients

RAPID CITY, S.D. – For the second year in a row, SHIFT Garage is getting ready to gift a vehicle to a person or family in need and you can help decide who that is.

SHIFT Garage is a non-profit, free-labor auto repair shop with one garage each in Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Each garage will give away a vehicle before Christmas.

Between now and Tuesday, December 20th, you can nominate and vote for someone you believe deserves a free vehicle.

SHIFT began as an outreach ministry of Fountain Springs Church but is now an independent ministry.

It helps people living in or near poverty repair their vehicles for very low cost.

SHIFT Garage services offer a hand up

SHIFT Garage founder Joe Smith says the organization knows how hard life can be without reliable transportation. He says the Christmas Car Giveaway is “the community’s chance to bless someone they know.”

Chris Erickson is the director of the Rapid City garage. He says he’s seen firsthand how valuable reliable transportation can be to someone living near the edge.

I donated a vehicle that I didn’t think was valuable,” said Erickson. “And it went to a single mom who was finally able to get her kid to daycare, finally able to get more hours. And you go from barely surviving to thriving because you have the power to get yourself to where you need to go.”

SHIFT Garage has also partnered with Black Hills Federal Credit Union to help low-income patrons learn financial literacy and establish credit.

If you’d like to nominate or vote for a person or family to receive a free vehicle, you can do so on the SHIFT Garage Facebook page. And if you’d like to learn more about SHIFT Garage or to donate, visit their website, www.shiftgarage.org.
