Charlotte Avila named Veteran of the Month in Rapid City

A local veteran is being honored by the City of Rapid City.

Charlotte Avila, a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, is selected as Rapid City’s Veteran of the Month for September.

Avila has been stationed at numerous bases throughout the United States, serving as a vehicle operations dispatcher for many years.  At Nellis AFB, she retrained in health care services management and utilized the training while stationed in the European Theater of Operations for seven years. She concluded her military career with the 28th Medical Group at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

During her military career, Avila received the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor and six Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal with one Service Star.

For several years, she has been active with VFW Rushmore Post 1273 and American Legion Post 175.  She is a life member of DAV Chapter 3 and VFW Post 2730.

Avila will be recognized by Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender during Monday’s City Council meeting.
