Central wrestling gearing up for final month of the regular season

RAPID CITY, S.D. –  The most difficult path to the South Dakota Class ‘A’ Wrestling Tournament almost always seems to go through Region 4A, where a number of the state’s top wrestlers reside.

When the one-day tournament actually kicks off next month in Belle Fourche, Rapid City Central hopes to be in the mix for a region title.

Central is currently ranked number two in the Class ‘A’ rankings behind Rapid City Stevens. So far this year, the Cobblers have placed very high at several different tournaments including a first place finish at the Mandan Tournament.

Plus, the Cobblers are now 16-3 in duals this season, after a successful weekend at the Kelly Walsh Dual Tournament in Casper, Wyoming.

“We did go 6-1,” RC Central wrestling coach Lance Pearson said. “There was a three-way tie and we lost out on place first or second. But one of the teams that we knocked off there was Star Valley, Wyoming who was on an 82 dual win streak up until we knocked them off this past weekend. So I know the boys take a lot of pride in that.”

Central currently has two wrestlers that are ranked number one in their respective weight classes, Cael Lason at 113 pounds and Wyatt Jungclause at 170 pounds.

But the Cobblers also have a handful of wrestlers ranked in the top eight.

Overall head coach Lance Pearson says his team needs to work on being more consistent during the last month of the regular season.

“We need all 10 or 11 that we’re kind of counting on at the state tournament, to really step up and all wrestle consistently together,” Pearson said. “Then really the opportunity for us as a team every thing’s possible. That’s everything from winning the state title to possibly missing the awards stand and not finishing in the top six.”
