Cavaliers aim for 6th straight girls hoops title

RAPID CITY, S.D. – St. Thomas More has dominated Class ‘A’ girls basketball for the past several years.

In fact, the Cavaliers won their fifth straight state title last season. But it may be a challenge for the Cavaliers to win six championships in a row.

Graduation hit St. Thomas More hard last season, losing five talented seniors. This year, the Cavaliers will rely on two returning players with experience, Alex Kandolin and Haleigh Timmer.

They’ll be joined by a core group of juniors including Skyler Sullivan, Ciara Benson and Casey Cooper.

Head Coach Brandon Kandolin says it will take a total team effort in order to be successful this season.

“This year is definitely going to be, how are we going to move the ball?” Kandolin said. “How much pressure defense can we get because a lot of times we do score a lot of points in the transition? So that’s going to be an emphasis. We’re going to be a very well balanced team looking to score.”

St. Thomas More, whose ranked No. 1 in the preseason polls, opens the season on Thursday, Dec. 13 at home against Alliance, Nebraska. Then the Cavaliers travel to Sioux Falls on Dec. 15 for the Pentagon Classic.
