Cattle shows at BHSS network ranchers for future sales

The Black Hills Stock Show is well underway and throughout the week, different breeds of cattle are featured at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center for show and sales.

Each morning, ranchers bring their cattle out to be washed, blow dried, and polished to later showcase their best self.

Troy Thomas, a fourth generation rancher selling his own cattle, says the Black Hills Stock Show is unique in that everyone who brings cattle to show, sells their cattle the day of the event.

But more importantly, the ranchers are able to show their stock with old customers and to potentially new ones.

“For us, it’s about seeing the people, getting our cattle back in front of our customers that we only see a couple times a year,” said Thomas. “We make some new contacts but the Stock Show draws a lot of people in western South Dakota and it’s a good opportunity for us to get out and see people and let them see our cattle.”
