Casino Fire: Fast moving grassfire moves across Oglala Lakota County

Critical fire conditions including low relative humidity and high winds have fueled this grass fire along highway 18, just southwest of Oglala.

UPDATE (7/20/22 – 10:01 a.m.): At 9:43 p.m. Tuesday, fire crews were still working on hot spots on the southern edge of the fire.

BIA 41 has been opened up to traffic, and homeowners were able to get back to their homes.

Crews worked through the night to try and contain the fire.

OGLALA, SD – A fast moving grass fire is moving SE from Prairie Wind Casino in Oglala Lakota County, just off highway US-18.

Northwest winds gusting to 40 MPH, along with relative humidity values in the teens have made it favorable for extreme fire behavior.

The initial call came in around 3:22 PM, BIA has requested assistance from local, state and federal entities which have responded in the since then.

One air attack platform, three SEAT, one LEAD plane, one heavy air tanker is inbound and one heavy airtanker has been ordered.

OST Emergency Management has indicated that law enforcement will be making stops at homes to check on residents.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and there is no official word on acreage.
