The crash happened near Exit 48 on Sunday morning. The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit the rail.

While both the vehicle and the guardrail sustained damage, they say the barrier did exactly what it was supposed to.

“These guardrails are designed to catch the vehicle and prevent it from going across the median and into oncoming traffic,” said the South Dakota Highway Patrol in a Facebook post.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts and sustained only minor injuries.
