Canyon Lake spillway complete, more construction remains

The spillway at Canyon Lake is now complete, but the construction isn't over.

The $3.5 million project is getting closer to completion. The spillway, which was last updated after the flood of 1972, was reconstructed, fixing leaks and the aging infrastructure.

Landscaping, parking lots and sidewalks are still under construction. Part of Canyon Lake Drive remains closed as new asphalt is laid. Because of all of the recent water releases out of Pactola Reservoir, the project's plan to remove silt from the lake will be suspended into the near future with no firm date.

Darrell Shoemaker, Communication Coordinator for City of Rapid City, announces, "This is a project that the city is happy to have completed. I think with all of the amenities, it will be great for citizens to come out and enjoy. I look forward to people utilizing the lake, and again, it was a project that needed to be done."
