Bunnies take center stage in Hermosa

HERMOSA, S.D. – The Custer County Fairgrounds didn’t go to the dogs Saturday – it went to the bunnies.

The Black Hills Rabbit Club held a rabbit show at the fairgrounds’ Community Building.

More than 30 rabbit breeders brought their finest leporine specimens, hoping to take home best-in-show honors.

Judges carefully examined each rabbit, looking for conformity to a set of strict standards for each breed.

But for the participants, the rabbit show is about more than the competition.

“It’s really fun to socialize,” said Jamie Amunrud, president of the Black Hills Rabbit Club. “You get to meet up with your friends that you know that may not be in the same neighborhood. And we all get together, we visit and trade stock, sell stock. And of course for the love of the rabbits and the pride of producing something that fits the standard if you win.”

Winners in each category got to take home an embroidered apron.
