“I’m asking South Dakotans for the opportunity to continue serving them in the U.S. Senate,” Thune’s statement said. “South Dakota deserves a strong and effective senator who can deliver the results they expect. I am uniquely positioned to get that job done and I look forward to earning the support of all South Dakotans in the 2022 election for U.S. Senate.”
Senator Thune had expressed to NewsCenter1 that he may not seek re-election due to family concerns and the rigors of constant commuting to Washington.
Sen. Thune is currently the second-highest ranking Republican in the U.S Senate. He was first elected to congress in 1996.
