Box Elder service road to close ahead of I-90 expansion

BOX ELDER, S.D. – Some upcoming changes to the North Service Road in Box Elder are preparations for bigger development down the road.

The service road is expected to close sometime in August between Bennett Road and North Elk Vale Road, just next to the Flying J, to make way for the expansion of I-90 in the Box Elder corridor.

As soon as construction on East Mall Drive can be completed and serve as an alternate but more permanent route, the service road is expected to close.

Mike Carlson, Rapid City Area Engineer for the South Dakota DOT explains the closure is in preparation of a larger project — the expansion of I-90 from two to three lanes in both directions from Exit 61 to 67. It’s something that’s taken a lot of coordination with the City of Box Elder to build up East Mall Drive.

“If we worked with them and the developers and we threw some money into this project, they get their street built to their standards, ” said Carlson. “The developers are out hardly any money at all and they can start developing the land so they can build what they want for businesses in that location.”

The I-90 service road is expected to close sometime in August.

Construction on I-90 itself is not set to begin until at least 2027 and will be completed in approximately two year segments, one for Exit 61 to 63 and the second for Exit 64 to 67. In total, Carlson expects the project to cost between $50-60 million dollars.
