Box Elder family helping community with “Take what you need” table
BOX ELDER, S.D. — If you’ve walked into a store within the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed some items are out of stock and have been taken by people preparing for quarantine.
One family in Box Elder is doing their part to help their neighbors – with a “Take what you need” table. The table has everything from fruits, to pet supplies and personal hygiene products.
As a military family in the community for 14 years, the Rennells often receive household items from families that are moving to another base.
They had extra supplies and some supplies that they cannot use, so they decided to put them on a table in front of their home.
“A little a spring a little share with your neighbor because everything is uncertain,” Sarah Rennells said. “Nobody knows and everybody who can’t get to the store is always looking for something and I had something.”
The family will keep the table out daily from 10 a.M. To 7 p.M., and all of the items are free for the community.
“But we also need to take it a step further and do it for the community,” Damian Rennells said. “The community is a team and we need to put the community above ourselves.”
After spending almost 20 years in the Air Force, Damien says his role in the community goes back to one of the Air Force’s core values.
“Service before self,” Damien said.
