Boots on the Ground

Local VFW Gives Back

Rapid City — Today the Rapid City Veterans of Foreign Wars came together to support homeless veterans in the community.

Boots on the Ground is an annual event which provides veterans with necessary cold weather gear and items for winter. In support of the event, there were also representatives from the veterans affairs to assist veterans with questions and inquiries.  Lisa Jendry says it is a great experience, being able to support those who have given so much to protect our freedoms.

She says “Yeah just come check it out, and get involved in other events like this and just see what it means to those who are struggling, and sometimes it’s just the thing to get them through, not just physically, but emotionally as well.

While the VFW is targeted towards veterans, civilian patrons are more than welcome. All funds received at the VFW directly go to supporting veterans. Rushmore VFW Post Commander Adam Swift says there is a veterans relief fund for veterans in need. Assistance oftentimes comes in the form of offsetting costs when necessary. helping with submitting claims and making sure veterans are receiving the benefits and compensations they are entitled to.

Both Swift and Jendry encourage the public to get involved, regardless of military affiliation.
