Body of missing man recovered in Butte County
UPDATE — Nov. 18, 2019 3:15 p.m.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office says missing Vale man, Glen Shay, 67 was found Tuesday afternoon. His body was recovered at approximately 1:00 p.m.
According to Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere, Shay was found along the Belle Fourche River about three miles east of Highway 79 by kayakers aiding in the search.
Lamphere says it appears that Shay slipped in the water and calls the incident an accidental drowning.
Officials urge caution along river banks, which can be weak due to recent high water levels.
Multiple agencies aided in the search including the Butte County Sheriff’s Department, Vale Volunteer Fire Department, Nisland Fire Department, Belle Fourche Volunteer Fire Department and Bureau of Land Management rangers. State aircraft were flown as well, utilizing infrared technology.
In a statement from the sheriff’s office, they express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Shay. The sheriff’s office would also like to thank all the agencies that assisted in the search, as well as everyone in the county and on social media for providing information to law enforcement.
BUTTE CO., S.D. — Officials in Butte County, South Dakota, are searching for a 67-year-old man who was reported missing Monday morning.
Glen Shay is from Vale, S.D., which is approximately 30 miles east of Belle Fourche and eight miles south of Newell. He was last seen at about 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. According to family members, he was headed north of Vale on foot to go fishing in the Belle Fourche River.
Shay is believed to be wearing a black leather coat with cut-off sleeves, a red shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots. Family members say he should also have been carrying two fishing poles, a tackle box, and a folding chair.
Chief Deputy of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Tristan Clements, says Shay suffered a brain injury several years ago and functions at a childlike level.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Department, Vale Volunteer Fire Department, Nisland Fire Department, Belle Fourche Volunteer Fire Department and Bureau of Land Management rangers are all involved in the search.
