Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo hosts Ranch Sorting Kick-Off event

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Following the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo held its annual Ranch Sorting kick-off event.

The Kick-Off Sort ran over the weekend and featured competitors on horseback racing the clock to sort cattle into pens.

While relatively new in the rodeo industry, Ranch Sorting is rapidly gaining popularity and plays a role in celebrating traditional ranch work.

According to a statement by Dave Wolfe, the president of the CINCH Ranch Sorting National Championships, ranch sorting preserves “the heritage and integrity of the ranching lifestyle, while providing a family oriented, competitive riding experience at the grassroots level.”

The competition was hosted at the James Kjerstand Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds and winners received prizes like trophy belt buckles, stirrups, monogrammed equine blankets and more.
