Black Hills State women’s basketball team set for season opener

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The beginning of the 2020-21 women’s basketball season is on the horizon for Black Hills State University.

In fact, the Yellow Jackets have been patiently waiting since the team didn’t play any non-conference games this year.

The Lady Yellow Jackets are coming off another successful season in which they finished 17-11 overall and 14-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Black Hills State lost three players to graduation but the Yellow Jackets return their two leading scorers.

Seniors Raquel Wientjes and Morgan Ham who averaged 16.6 and 14.3 points respectively.

“They’ve done a fantastic job from a leadership standpoint,” Black Hills State women’s basketball coach Mark Nore said. “From being ready for practice, managing and handling all the adversity that we’ve kind of thrown at them to this point, I can’t say enough about them and then the other seniors too that have just kind of stepped up into those roles and just kind of rolling with the punches.”

The Lady Yellow Jackets are projected to finish fifth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Mark Nore, who’s entering his 19th season as BHSU head coach, says his team needs to be more consistent defensively in order to be successful this year.

“Our offense kind of dictated out defense last year,” Nore said. “So moving forward this year, the teams that defend in our league are the teams that usually are in the top tier of the group. So for us, we just need to have that more consistent play defensively. And I think you’re going to see a lot more of a pace with our offense.”

Black Hills State opens the season on Friday, Dec. 4 at Western Colorado University followed by a game on Dec. 5 against Fort Lewis College.

The Yellow Jackets will host Colorado Mesa University on Dec. 11.
