Black Hills National Forest assessing possible tornado near Tinton

SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Black Hills National Forest is looking into a wind event, that could have possibly been a tornado, which occurred on Friday, July 10 near an old mining town known as Tinton.

An initial assessment shows that the storm traveled towards Terry Peak. A reconnaissance flight is scheduled to take place Saturday, July 11 to determine the path of the storm and the extent of damage to the forest.

Officials are urging caution in the areas as many roads and trails may be blocked. Dangerous snags may be adjacent to the roads and trail systems.

Forest Service crews are currently clearing roads and will work to get trails open when the road clearing is finished.
