BLACK HILLS FORECAST: Except above normal temps and winds to remain out of the South today

From Meteorologist Erik Dean: Prime Fire Weather continues again today.

Forecast Discussion: Tuesday, October 5th

Today’s forecast will be much like yesterday. Once again, the main concern will be the above normal temperatures, and low humidity. Highs will go back into the Upper 80s with humidity values as low as 15-20%. The other big story today is that southerly wind, which is what is keeping us warmer than normal. (Keep in mind, our average high for this time of year is only 66°.) Wind will stay between 10-15 MPH with gusts a high as 25 MPH. I am anticipating on the wind to start picking up a bit around the 2 PM Timeframe.Temperature Plus Forecast IconWind Speed

Earlier, we had a Fire Weather Watch for Carter & Harding County. That has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning that expires tomorrow at 9:00 PM. As we’ve been discussing, with the low humidity, the unseasonably warm temps, and the wind gusts picking up, it could cause some fire behavior. So please use extra caution, especially in the areas where we have the Red Flag Warning out.Knbn Earth Borders And Roads

SHORT TERM:

We’ve said this several times through the year, and we’ll continue to say it. We need the precipitation. Right now, Rapid City is sitting at 2.62” below normal for the year. This is still on top of the 4.58 “ from last year. According to the 1991-2020 Climate information, we should average 17.44” of rain in Rapid City. Last year we only had 12.86” of precipitation. Some places such as Pierre, is sitting at 5.55” below normal for the year.  Faith is sitting at 6.05” below, and Buffalo, WY. Is sitting at 6.69” below normal. I have attached the map showing how we are faring for the year.Cc1 Rainfall Totals Departure

LONG TERM:

If you tuned into NewsCenter1 Today, you heard Meteorologist Brant Beckman talk about the long term forecast, which included above normal precipitation. No doubt, it is much needed here! The good news,  I do have a rain chance in the forecast Friday, going into Saturday. The other thing to look at is the temperature. We are cooling down with highs in the 70s on Friday, and near Normal for this weekend. How about highs in the Upper 50s – Low to mid 60s?

THE BOTTOM LINE:

PLEASE USE CAUTION TODAY! Temps will remain above normal. Please stay hydrated if you have to be outdoors.

In regards to the Auburn Fire, PLEASE DO NOT FLY DRONES IN THE AREA!!! Flying Drones near the affected area could result in Air Operation being shut down.
