Black Hills Forecast Discussion: Potential storm next week targets South Dakota

Models are beginning to converge on the Northern Plains as the path of a powerful storm system expected Monday through Wednesday of next week
  • There is high confidence that a large storm system is likely to impact vast sections of the Northern Plains Early Next Week.
  • The State of South Dakota looks to be in the crosshairs of this system, with central and eastern portions of the state likely to see high impacts, with the western portion South Dakota and the Black Hills in a zone of uncertainty.
  • Dry, cold air will be wrapping behind this system as it progresses northeast through Nebraska and central South Dakota, complicating snow forecasts for regions on the west and northwest side the center of low pressure – this includes the Black Hills and western South Dakota.
  • Variables such as moisture content, timing, location, and overall strength are still uncertain at this time.
  • With this in mind, The potential for a powerful storm system to impact Western South Dakota is reasonable.
  • Impacts may include heavy snow, wind, icy roads and difficult to near impossible travel conditions.
  • The timeline could be anywhere from late Sunday through early Thursday, but consensus so far puts most impacts sometime Monday evening through early Wednesday.
  • Those living in the eastern portion of our area in Ziebach, Haakon, Jackson and Bennett County should monitor forecasts diligently over the next several days. Early preparation for a significant winter storm in these areas is a reasonable measure at this time – but not necessarily the total cancellation of plans.
  • There remains a high probability that this forecast shifts in major ways over the next few days, but there is enough confidence to start taking this storm system seriously for those living towards the central portion of South Dakota.
  • As the forecast develops, we will provide updates daily.
