Black Hills Energy is providing 1,000 free trees to the public this Earth Day
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Black Hills Energy will be giving away 1,000 free trees this Earth Day as part of their Energy-Saving Trees Initiative in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.
BHE has been putting on this program since 2014 and has planted nearly 8,000 energy-saving trees since. A strategically-placed tree can save a homeowner up to 20% on energy costs all year long.
Marc Eyre, Vice President of Operations for Black Hills Energy, said, “You just kinda think about the prevailing winds in the winter time. Evergreen trees, they’re kinda building a wind block, you can cut down on some of the wind there and reduce your heating costs. And then in the summer the thing to think about is if you can have something that’s blocking the hot afternoon sun in the summertime, [which] reduces your cooling costs.”
If you are interested in receiving a free tree through the program but are unsure on where or how to plant it, Black Hills Energy can help.
“When you select a tree, you know, they have a cool tool there where you can look at different places to plant the tree and what kind of impacts that might have. And so like I said, everybody’s situation is a little bit different of where they can plant the tree on their property. So you can kinda play around with that a little bit.”
The trees are expected to be delivered sometime between May and June, which means they can go right into the ground. But before you do, officials say you should always call 811 at least two days before you plan to dig to make sure your tree doesn’t interfere with utility lines.
“Mark the area in white and we’ll have utility representatives come out mark the area make sure you are safe in doing your projects.”
The program kicks off on April 22nd ,but if you would like to reserve your free tree, you can do so now through the link here.
