Black Hills Energy breaks ground on new operations center

Company hopes to have it fully running by 2020

SPEARFISH S.D. — Black Hills Energy broke ground on their new operations center in Spearfish on Monday afternoon.

The site is located on Hillsview Road, not far from Black Hills State University. A full-time staff of four people will work in the roughly 6,000 square foot facility. The building has a price tag of $1.7 million.

Service crews will be able to keep their diesel trucks in a heated garage so they can respond faster to outages, and not have to wait for them to warm up in the winter.

Marc Eyre, the director of operations for Black Hills Energy, said that the need for the new facility is great.

“Over the years, our needs have changed and the office here is responsible for providing safe, reliable electric service to the customers here in Spearfish and the surrounding areas.”

Black Hills Energy plans to sell the current downtown Spearfish facility on Hudson Street. Eyre also said that by removing the older facility downtown, it will help free up parking spaces and potential business real estate.

Black Hills Energy hopes to have the Hillsview facility operational early next year.
