CUSTER, S.D. — With all the visitors passing through the Black Hills for the Independence Day celebrations this weekend, one visitor to Custer drew more notice than usual early Friday morning.

According to a Facebook post from the Custer County Sheriff, the ursine wanderer was spotted passing through a hotel parking lot on the north side of Mount Rushmore Road.

Although bear sightings in the Black Hills are uncommon, bears can be dangerous if engaged with. Humans can avoid conflicts with bears by never approaching or feeding them.

The U.S. Forest Service has many resources for ways to avoid conflicts with bears, along with other animal hazards of the Black Hills.
