Arkansas native Darsha Nelson (née Dodge) joined the NewsCenter1 team in November 2020 as a Multimedia Journalist.
After high school, she lived and worked in Berlin, Germany. While living abroad, she was able to travel to Sweden, Poland, Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic. With her love for travel, she has also visited Austria, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, and even completed a trek to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, including a summit of Kala Patthar (18,514’).
She attended the University of Arkansas and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Communications, German, and History. While at the U of A, she was an international student mentor, an intern with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of African Affairs, and she performed with the Razorback Color Guard at football games and events around the country.
Darsha has been in the Black Hills full-time since 2016, having worked at places such as Mount Rushmore and for the Pennington County Treasurer’s Office, before landing her dream job in journalism at NC1. She previously played roller derby for the Black Hills Wildfire and practiced Capoeira Regional along with her brother, Ian.
She is a huge fan of Joss Whedon’s Firefly, the New York Rangers hockey team, and YouTuber Philip DeFranco. Darsha can’t cook, but makes a mean Harvey Wallbanger, and says if she could meet any celebrity, it would be Mariska Hargitay.
After moving to South Dakota, she met her husband, Devin, in 2017, and they married a year later, even though he never lets her win at Mario Kart. They live in Box Elder with their three insane cats and more houseplants than anyone should have.
