Bill for Meade County shooting range fails SD House vote

Shooting Range 2

PIERRE, S.D. — On Monday, state funding for the proposed shooting range in Meade County failed once again to get enough support in the state House.

The bill would have allocated $2.5 million to South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks for construction of the facility. It needed a two-thirds majority vote after being “smoked out” Friday last week. Debate in the House was centered on the use of the money.

Opponents of the bill noted that the facility will be built regardless through private donations and that the state money could be better spent elsewhere, while those in favor noted the economic benefits a state of the art facility would bring to the region.

Following the vote, state Rep. Tim Goodwin filed an intent to reconsider which failed late Monday afternoon.
