Ben Connot named head football coach at Rapid City Christian

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Christian has hired Ben Connot as the Comets’ new head football coach.

Connot replaces Ron McLaughlin who was the head coach for four years.

The 25-year old Connot was a two-time state football champion at Winner High School.

After college, Connot became the head football coach at Colome High School and he led the Cowboys to a Class 9B state title in 2018.

“Coach Connot comes out of a great program at Winner,” Rapid City Christian activities director Kyle Courtney said. “So I know he has a background in how to run a successful program. He’s obviously had a lot of success as a head coach too at Colome winning a state championship. I know he’s had a lot of success as a player. So as a young coach who’s had a winning pedigree and had success already at a young age, I think he fits a lot of the boxes we were looking for as far as the coaching side of things.”

Later this summer, the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors will consider adopting a five-class football system instead of the current seven classes.

That means Rapid City Christian will probably move from Class 9AA to 11B.

So Kyle Courtney feels Connot is the perfect person to help the school make that transition.

“Those numbers go off your boys enrollment, 9th through 11th grade,” Courtney said. “We anticipate here in the next time that they poll the numbers that we probably will be bumped over that number to go to 11B. So that’s kind of what we’re anticipating. We don’t know for sure. But that’s kind of what it looks like coming down the road so.”
