Belle Fourche takes steps to reopen community center

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — Belle Fourche is ready to take its first baby step towards re-opening the community.

The first step will be taken with a cold opening of the community center on Tuesday, May 26, which has been closed to the public for about two months.

The opening will come with some restrictions. The gymnasium, pool and auditorium will remain closed to the public, and children under the age of 14 are not allowed in the building.

Belle Fourche Mayor Gloria Landphere says the rec center staff has adopted appropriate sterilization policies and spaced equipment to allow for social distancing.

“We’re just going to work to make staff safe, that’s going to make the public safe and follow our guidelines.” said Mayor Landphere.

Landphere says this is the first step towards opening the rest of the city’s facilities. That’s scheduled for Monday, June 1st, when the community center is also expected to open fully.
