Ballet dancers prepare to put on Nutcracker Production

The first magical spark of the Holiday Season may begin with the Black Hills Dance Theater’s presentation of The Nutcracker.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Black Hills Dance Theatre is an all-volunteer board of directors who’s purpose is to bring quality dance education and professional dance experiences to the Black Hills Area Community.

For the Nutcracker, they hire a professional choreographer to do all the choreography, directorial duties and casting for the show.

The Nutcracker may be more than a Christmas tradition, for some it’s an important part of a dancer’s training and a means of showcasing hard work and dedication.

All the dancers commit many hours of rehearsal for a little over a month.

Adrianna Hix and Emilia Andreson were both chosen to play Clara, each one taking the lead in a single performance.

Both have been dancing most of their lives and have been in previous productions of the ballet.

Hix says, “Well, we have rehearsal every night and we have a lot of putting together, there’s a lot of transitions that we have to work through. And just adding every piece together to the puzzle takes a lot of time, so we are working very hard.”

They say the long hours and sore feet are worth the experience.

Andreson adds, “We’ve put in a lot of hours, a lot of work. We’re at rehearsal every day for the last two months or so from about 4:00 till 9:00 every night. And because we are in such a big part of the show, we’re here a lot. So we’ve definitely been putting in all the hours and the the work. But it’s coming together very nicely and we are excited to see the final production.”

The youngest children in the ballet not only have the older children as role models, but also the production’s featured professional dancers.

Andreson says she was thankful and excited to get the role as Clara, saying, “It’s just a really awesome role to get to play because we’re in such a big part of the show. We get to interact with kids of all different ages and then really be a role model for those younger girls and boys who will be the lead roles in the future.”

The volunteer staff and dancers welcome everyone to the show as a way to get in the holiday spirit.

Hix says, “It’s just a really good holiday tradition to bring to your family, it’s one of our favorite parts about this dance season, is everybody coming together and to watch it, see all the work that we put in.”

The Nutcracker Performance will be held at the Monument Fine Arts Theatre on November 26 at 7 p.m. and November 27 at 2 p.m.

“It’s just a super awesome thing that goes on in our community, dancers from different backgrounds, different studios are able to come together to put this production on. We work hard for it so great to see the outcome and the final product of it,” says Andreson.
