Badlands Sabres set for season opener

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The newest hockey team in Rapid City is set to kick off the season on Friday night.

The Badlands Sabres will travel to Wyoming to face off against the Gillette Wild.

The Sabres held a scrimmage on Wednesday at the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena to give fans a chance to check out the team.

The Badlands Sabres are a member of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League.

The junior hockey team will play in the Frontier Division which includes a total of seven teams located across Wyoming, Montana and in Rapid City.

The ages of the players range from 16 to 20 and includes four players from Rapid City; Mason Martin, Kael Delzer, Derrick Brown and Seth Stock.

“We actually have a nucleus of players that are young and old,” said Sabres head coach Brendon Hodge. “We have players that are brand new to junior hockey. We also have players that have junior hockey experience under their belt which is nice to have. All in all, we’re very excited. The roster is still in process right now. We’re still building it. We’re still going to be adding some more players as we go here. But right now we feel comfortable.”

The Badlands Sabres home opener is this Saturday, Sept. 11 against Gillette.

The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. at the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena.
