Authorities say third fatality has been reported at Sturgis Rally

JOHNSON SIDING, S.D. — Authorities say that a third person had died as a result of a crash that happened during the 2019 Sturgis Rally.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Tony Weber, 67, of Yuma, Colorado, passed away on Sunday at the Rapid City Regional Hospital following a Friday crash near Johnson Siding.

The crash happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Norris Peak Road and Nemo Road, three miles north of Johnson Siding. According to a release, Weber was driving a 2015 Harley Davidson Street Glide northbound on Norris Peak Road when he lost control while approaching a bridge. The motorcycle slid into a ditch and struck a barbed wire fence.

Weber was not wearing a helmet. The South Dakota State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash. It’s the third fatality recorded during this year’s Sturgis Rally.

The other two fatalities include a Nebraska woman who was killed in a crash near Lead on Aug. 6 and an Oklahoma man involved in a crash on North Rochford Road on Aug. 5.
