Armed robbery in Rapid City leads to Custer standoff

UPDATE (9:10 p.m.) — As reported by the Custer County Chronicle, authorities say the suspect took his own life at about 7:30 p.m.

RCPD’s Public Information Officer Brendyn Medina tells NewsCenter1 that Rapid City and Custer are working on a joint news release about Tuesday night’s events.


CUSTER, S.D. — An armed robbery occurred Tuesday afternoon in Rapid City resulting in a standoff with law enforcement this evening in Custer.

The suspect robbed a clerk at gunpoint at Boyd’s Drug on East Saint Patrick Street — the suspect demanded prescription medications, the clerk complied and the suspect left the scene in a pickup.

A witness got the vehicle description and plate number. Police spotted the vehicle north of Custer, leading into a chase that took them into Custer.

According to Brendyn Medina with RCPD, the standoff is still ongoing.
