Armadillo’s planning ‘flavor explosion’ days for 24th season

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A long-time ice cream parlor is revamping their “flavor of the day” system as part of their 24th season in business.

On Friday, Armadillo’s Ice Cream Shoppe reopened for 2019 with old flavors and new plans.

The “flavor of the day”, Strawberry Butter, sated many sweet-toothed customers during lunch and after-school rushes.

Co-owner Austin Brummer greeted many regulars and some first-timers with delight. He said that patrons were equally excited to get a taste of their locally-famous confections.

“Everyone’s thankful that we’re back and being open again, and we’re happy to be open as well,” Brummer said. “March 1st is always fun time.”

Brummer and his father, Mike, showed many new employees the ropes throughout the day. He described the grand reopening as “organized chaos”, saying “it’s a little bit hectic as we work through the kinks … but we make it work.”

However, the new crew will have to learn a slightly different system this year. Starting April 15, Armadillo’s will introduce “flavor explosion” days to the 2019 season schedule.

Normally, a single “flavors of the day” is featured for two-to-three consecutive days before being rotated out with another. During “flavor explosion” days, the shoppe will offer six separate ice cream flavors in one day.

Brummer says the new system should give customers a better chance of finding their “flavorite” confection.

It’s something that we’ve never done before. It’s pretty exciting …  that will really rotate a lot more flavors in, and you get six different flavors on a single day.”

The “flavor explosion” days will run four times between March and October in four day spans. The confection parlor will also offer holiday-based ice creams during their “Christmas in July” event.
