Area schools to participate in ‘Be the Light’ campaign

STURGIS, S.D. – The coronavirus pandemic has cast darkness on sports and schools across the country.

But several empty athletic stadiums in the Black Hills will shine brightly on Thursday, April 16.

High schools around the region, including Sturgis, will be participating in the “Be the Light” campaign.

Stadium lights will be turned on at 8:20 p.m. for 20 minutes to honor of the Class of 2020.

That time was chosen because 8:20 is 20:20 in military time.

Community members are encouraged to drive by or park at the stadiums to show support for high school seniors, as well as, those working in the health care field.

“When we go through tough times, we come out on the other end being better people,” Sturgis High School Activities Director Todd Palmer said. “One of the ways that we can become better people is by showing our appreciation and our gratitude for those people who are on the front lines and who continue to work.”

Community members are reminded to follow social distancing guidelines and stay in your vehicle.

The following schools are planning to participate in the ‘Be the Light’ movement on Thursday.
