Annual balloon launch at historic Stratobowl
PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — Spectators were able to see the annual Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Launch this weekend.
The Stratobowl first gained fame in the 1930s, when high altitude balloons launched were from the site by the Army Air Corps and National Geographic. The launches provided vital information about the stratosphere and paved the road to the space age.
Today, pilots flock to the Stratobowl to pay homage to the balloon pilots that came before and revolutionized our understanding of aeronautical science. The three-day event is of course dependent on the weather, and the launches began at sunrise every day.
