The program opened with music performed by the Black Hawk fifth grade band, followed by holiday songs from students in the other grades.

This was the first gathering for performances at the school since COVID hit the scene.

In the audience, members of American Legion Post 22 surprised fourth grade teacher Audra West as the Legion’s South Dakota Educator of the Year.

“She competed with a lot of other educators for this day and she’s very dedicated to her children and making sure each one of them can learn in the way they’re able to learn. So she works with everybody and that’s what really made her stand out,” said American Legion Post 22 Adjutant Doug Harris.

Mrs. West was presented with a plaque and a check for $300.

Post 22 hopes the money will help with Mrs. West’s classroom needs. However, they did make a suggestion for ice cream for the class in the memo line of the check as ice cream is always a definite classroom need.
