Amendment B: Legalize sports betting in Deadwood?
DEADWOOD, S.D. — There is a lot at stake this election for casinos in Deadwood and perhaps more later with the sports betting referendum.
Amendment B would legalize sports betting in the city. 18 states have legalized sports betting and four have approved wagering, but are not yet active.
Those in favor of sports betting in Deadwood say the benefits would extend to more than just gaming in the city. They believe wagering would be extended to tribal gaming, and would boost tourism in the Black Hills and South Dakota especially during slow seasons.
“What’s good for Deadwood is good for the entire northern hills, it drives tourism,” said Mike Rodman, the Executive Director of the Deadwood Gaming Association. “And as the gaming revenue taxes are distributed throughout the state, to the state general fund, to state tourism, to historic preservation projects throughout the state, and to area school districts and other area municipalities. So, everybody benefits when Deadwood does well.”
Three nearby states have sports betting, Montana, Colorado and Iowa.
The hope with Amendment B is to keep South Dakota competitive.
