Air quality alert issued for west Rapid City

RAPID CITY, SD- In a press release Tuesday morning, the Rapid City Air Quality Office (RCAQO) issued an air pollution alert for dust which is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Rapid City for the area west of ‘The Gap’. The alert was issued by the National Weather Service in collaboration with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Northwest winds of 20 to 35 miles per hour, gusting to 50 miles per hour are forecasted during the alert period.  The gusty winds will suspend fine dust in the air, producing poor air quality in the alert area.

RCAQO recommends the elderly, young and anyone with respiratory problems to consider avoiding excessive physical exertion and to limit exposure to the outside air. The Air Quality Office advises anyone wishing to monitor air quality in Rapid City to visit the Air Quality Index item on the City’s home page at
