Air Pollution Alert issued for West Rapid City

Nws New AlertRAPID CITY, S.D. — Gusty winds expected later Friday morning and early afternoon have prompted the National Weather Service to issue an air pollution alert for areas of Rapid City west of “The Gap.”

The alert is in effect Friday, January 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sustained winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour gusting to 45 miles per hour suspend fine dust in the air. The elderly, young, and anyone with respiratory issues should limit or avoid outdoor physical exertion during the alert period.

The City says voluntary actions can be taken to reduce dust, including ceasing or reducing the manipulation of soil in construction, industrial and agricultural activities, and increasing the use of pollution controls for soil stabilization, waste pits, stock piles and construction sites.
