Air Force offers financial aid to military spouses moving with professional licenses

The program is Force wide and includes Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard

Military spouses with current professional licenses are now able to access Air Force funding to assist with moving their licenses across state lines.

When military spouses move from state to state, the cost can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars to renew their license.

The Air Force Spouse Licensure Reimbursement Program allows up to $500 toward renewing their license in the state their military spouse is assigned. The program is Force wide and includes Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard spouses.

Accessing the funds requires that the permanent change of station (PCS) or assignment (PCA) occurs within the United States or U.S. territories and applies to orders dated on or after Dec. 12, 2017. Families at Ellsworth Air Force Base can apply through the finance office.

“It does have to be on their orders,” said Joanne Amundson, Work Life Specialist at Ellsworth Air Force Base. “That allows them to obtain license reimbursement and they do have up to two years after the PCS move to obtain those benefits.”

The program does not apply to those wishing to get a first time license or spouses moving out of the state their military spouse is assigned.

This program comes after Gov. Kristi Noem signed House Bill 1111 into law which expedites licenses for military spouses moving to South Dakota. Together, the program and bill will alleviate the financial burden and shorten the process for license renewal, allowing spouses to get to work faster.

“For many military spouses, employment can be a huge way they both contribute to their families and their communities so for this policy to help alleviate the fees that are associated with employment is just really huge and means the world to military spouses who are qualified and ready to work,” said Lauren Kimball, military spouse.

For more information, contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center or finance office at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
