Ag Dept. unveils new burn permit system

New system offers more convenient access to applications, burn information

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A new and more convenient system for issuing burn permits in the Black Hills Fire Protection District has been rolled out.

Burn permits are required in the Black Hills Fire Protection District.

The new system is accessible online as part of the Department of Agriculture Wildland Fire Division’s move to a more user-friendly online permitting system.

In addition to a permit application, the system is also a one-stop shop for important information. Visitors can find burn procedures, frequently asked questions, and instructional videos there.

All of the standard permit requirements must continue to be followed. All current permits have been transferred to the new system and are still valid. Burn permits are required within the confines of the Black Hills Fire Protection District. The permits are not valid for burns on Black Hills National Forest lands. For burns on National Forest land, contact a Black Hills District Ranger office.

The system is mobile-friendly. Access the site at wildlandfire.sd.gov and click on “Burn Permit Website” under “Quick Links.” The site requires that you create an account.
