Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) ordinance approved by Legal and Finance Committee, Wednesday

RAPID CITY, S.D. –Rapid City’s Legal and Finance Committee approved a new ordinance that could allow for homeowners to add an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to their property, subject to codes.

ADUs are single-family units that are detached from a larger home, or can also be attached as a separate residence provided it is smaller than the primary dwelling. One of the two units must be owner occupied and the ADU is limited to blood-relations only.

This ordinance aids in the mission to create more relaxed housing codes within the city. Drafting the ordinance and having it approved has been a two-year long process.

The measure now moves to its first council reading Monday. There are hopes that it will be official by the start of 2020.
