A burned forest is a healthy forest
The Forest Service has set out to improve the Black Hills, by burning it.
HILL CITY, S.D. – The Forest Service initiated a large prescribed burn near Hill City Monday.
Among the objectives of the burn include scrubbing away possible fuels for future wildfires and maintaining a healthy ecosystem for the Black Hills.
Adam Von Eye, a burn boss with Black Hills National Forest Service talked about the multitude of benefits to prescribed burns, including scenery.
“A landscape with fire introduced to it more often is a better-looking product,” Von Eye stated. “It just looks good for anyone using the forest whether it be camping, hiking, hunting, it just looks better.”
The Forest Service is looking to burn around 270 acres.
So far weather conditions have proved favorable for the continuation of this project, despite some recent rainfall and cooler temperatures.
