7th Annual Evelyn Hohn Memorial Barrel Race

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Evelyn Hohn was a professional rodeo barrel racer and the Badland Circuit Champ.

Hohn passed away suddenly in 2009. After her passing, her family wanted to figure out a way to honor her and they thought the best way was to host a barrel race because that was one of the things she loved most in life.

On Saturday her family honored her legacy with the 7th annual Evelyn Hohn Memorial Barrel Race at the Central States Fairgrounds. She was raised on a ranch in Hot Springs where she fell in love with barrel racing. Dozens of people came out to show support for Hohn’s family.

She influenced her nieces and cousins to get involved in rodeo and she made a lasting impression on the rodeo community. “The entries vary we had 37 pre-entries enter over the phone last night,” said Lacey Jo March, Hohn’s niece.

Competitors have a chance at winning a number of prizes such as – patches, equine health services, and belts. All of the event proceeds go to WAVI a local organization that assists and advocates for those affected by domestic violence.

Although it is a race many came out in support of Hohn and to enjoy a day in the arena.
